Oh Hey

Here are some things I’d like you to know:

+ We are going on another vacation this year. !!!! To Denver to visit the same dear friends we visited last Spring. After feeling like vacations were a distant memory in that phase of we have two babies under two years old, two vacations feels like we won the lottery. We’re bringing the kids and we are so looking forward to a long a weekend away.

+ ALSO I got to have a long girls’ weekend in Austin this year. I know. It’s crazy.  Plus the kids were sick as I was literally driving down the road.  Matt called and said both girls just threw up on themselves in their carseats.  #cringe  Before you think I’m a horrible mom, I offered to turn around three times but my darling husband told me to go on.  Thankful for him and my mother in law who helped out all weekend.

+ Matt and I have taken to having (almost) weekly lunch dates at our favorite authentic Mexican food place. He picks me up from work on my lunch hour and off we go. It’s so nice having that time, just the two of us to chat. Also the Wednesday special: puerco en salsa verde is ahhhhmazing. I get it every single time.

+ I scratched Run a Half Marathon off my bucket list. It truly was an amazing experience. I wish I would’ve written about it much sooner when the memories and endorphins were fresh. I crossed the finish line in just under 2 hours and 10 minutes, and I was pleased as punch with that time. My average pace was about 9:40 and I just cannot say what a great experience the entire thing was – from training, to crossing the finish line, to seeing all the runners and supporters, to my sweet family waiting for me at the end. I’m grateful for it all.

+ In keeping with one little word for 2016 I embarked on a new business adventure with Rodan and Fields. I’ve been intrigued by this company for years and this was the year I took the plunge. First, I love quality of the products, I love how my skin feels, I love helping people feel great about their own skin, and I’m also loving the business side of things. I’m stretching and growing and being challenged in ways that are so new to me.  Of course I’d love to share with you if you are at all interested.

How are you?  It’s been a while.

Five Years

Matt and I celebrated our five year anniversary this year in Mexico.  Specifically we stayed at the Excellence Cancun Riveria based off several recommendations from different and unrelated people.  It’s an all inclusive adults only resort and fit our bill for low key and worry free.  We had a super lovely time.

We drank, we lounged, we read and read and read, we went to the spa and got massages and hydrotherapy, we ate, then we ate some more.  It was so amazing to be able to sit and just be.   Then I got really stir crazy and demanded that we get up and actually go do at least one thing.  Turns out I have a limit on how much lounging and relaxing I can handle.  (Two days is lovely, three days is really pushing it.) So we went on an excursion and had a really great time! I’m sure I’ll post about our day away from the resort someday soon.  (hahahaha – “soon”)

I’m so glad that we were able to have this time together.  We haven’t been on a “real” vacation since before our oldest daughter was born – she’ll be three in May!  We returned refreshed and super excited to see our girls.

p.s.  Unrelated thoughts: While I was in the shower I had an idea for a new blog name!  I know, I blog so much right?   I’ve actually had quite a few different blog names but nothing ever seems “quite right” – because it matters #sarcasm.  Turns out motherhood, marriage, work, and laundry take up a lot of time.  But I love writing and sharing photos… I can’t quite call it quits and so sometimes random ideas hit me.

The Weekend Is Almost Upon Us

Hope you have a great weekend!  It’s Father’s Day so I plan on calling my own dad and letting him know that I love him.  And of course the girls and I are planning on celebrating Matt – because he’s a great dad and we’re grateful to call him ours.

Lately I’ve had relationships on the mind, specifically romantic relationships (marriage in my case) and friendships.  Both have such a special place in our lives and go through seasons, would you agree?  Here are some great posts I’ve read lately in regards to both kinds of relationships:

Friendship:

How to Make Plans With Friends:  The comments in this post are good.  Making plans with friends as an adult is hard.  So many things come into play now that we are no longer young carefree college kids.  Now we have our own kids, husbands, families, and careers to deal with, which makes trying to schedule a dinner between 5 people damn near impossible.  I’ve decided that I’m going to try a new approach.  Usually if I decide to invite a group of girls out for dinner I’ll send out a text that says, “Are you girls free any night this week for dinner?”  It’s chaos.  One will say yes, another will say no -but maybe next week, and then another says they’ll get back to you…but then they forget to get back to you.  Two weeks later it’s “so what about that dinner?” and the entire process starts over again.  It wears me out!  I feel like the entire thing should be simpler and why didn’t the two people who were free originally just go to dinner?!  From now on, when I decide to do the inviting my text will say something along these lines: “Hi I’m free this Wednesday for dinner!  I’d love if some or all of you could join.  Let me know if you are free!”  Boom!  That way if anyone is free the plans will happen, if someone’s not…sorry hopefully you can join the next time!  What do you think?  Do you find that it’s hard to make plans with your friends these days?

Marriage: Now that we have two kiddos it takes extra effort for Matt and I to get some one on one time.  I really cherish our times with our sweet babies but I still really enjoy the times when it’s just Matt and I too.  Also I think it’s important.  We’re still taking turns planning out  monthly dates and during the week we’ll sometimes meet up for impromptu lunch dates.  Every little effort counts!

+ This anniversary post.

Denver in May

Last month Matt and I took both our girls to Denver.  It was our first vacation as a family of four.  It was the first time either of the girls had ever been on an airplane.  Which means it was the first time we travelled as parents with two kids on an airplane.

We survived.  Barely.

I’m kidding.  It was fine and worth it! I won’t say it was easy because that would be a blatant lie.  Is anything “easy” when traveling with little people aged 2 years and 9 months?  (Two car seats, luggage, a back pack, a carry on, strollers, one person stays with the kids and luggage while the other parks the car, waiting for the strollers at curbside check for 30 minutes with two tired kids, changing diapers in an airport bathroom, etc, etc…you can imagine).

I will say that this trip was the “easiest” it could have been as far as family vacations go.  We stayed with our close friends at their lovely home in their awesome neighborhood.  (By awesome neighborhood I mean incredible neighborhood with the friendliest neighbors.  We seriously had the itch to go home pack up our house and move in next door.)  We had two bedrooms to ourselves, which is amazing when you have kids in tow.  The direct flight from Oklahoma City to Denver is just a little over an hour, so relatively short.  Our friends have a little boy, Alice’s age, and they played together perfectly.  All those factors made it an ideal first family vacation.

We did a lot of relaxing.  Eating at home, playing basketball, hanging in pj’s, drinking coffee, drinking cold beers outside, riding bikes, going on walks.  We went out to eat, maybe once or twice, and then our friends hosted a cook-out one afternoon.  The entire trip was low key and awesome.

The best part about vacation, besides the location and the break from the daily grind, are the people you’re with.  I’m pretty sure our friends, Adam and Marie,  are our family vacation soul mates.  We always seem to be on the same page and enjoy each other’s company so much.  Before we left we were already making plans for our next family get together.  Can’t wait!

And just like that, our five day trip was up.  One rough late afternoon flight later and we were back in Oklahoma City.  I will forever love vacations but there’s something about returning home after some time away.  It’s literally like slipping into your favorite pj’s and sighing in contentment.

The Weekend Is Almost Upon Us

Hooray for Friday!  This was us last Sunday afternoon: me trying to entertain the girls while Matt was busy whipping up cheese burgers for dinner.  This weekend we loosely plan to have our April Date (It’s Matt’s turn to plan) which will most likely occur at home since we have no babysitting lined up.  We are also planning on taking the girls to the zoo for the first time.   I’ve never been to the Oklahoma City Zoo, but I hear it’s not bad.  I have been to the San Diego Zoo dozens of times and it’s definitely great.  Matt and I are pretty excited to have a legitimate reason to go to the zoo.  🙂

What do you have planned for the weekend?

>>>>>

To get you to 5 o’clock, here are a couple things I so enjoyed on the internet this week:

100 different mascaras tested on one eye – I was happy to see that I liked many of the inexpensive brands best!

A spectacular and reflective wedding anniversary post

5 Ingredient Easy White Chicken Chili – I made this for my family for the 2nd time and it’s just so easy and so good.  We love it topped with crumbled tortilla chips, diced avocado, shredded cheddar, and a dollop of sour cream.

February Love

In our house, February 12th steals Valentine Day’s limelight.  The 12th is our anniversary and lucky for us, the grandparents watched the girls this month so we could go out on a proper date night.

This was considered Date #1 of our Year of Dates, and it was fun.  Nothing crazy, just dinner and a few drinks.  We were home and in bed by 11pm, but it sure was nice having some adult time and being just the two of us.

We celebrated four years of marriage this time around.  Four years of marriage, two years of dating prior to that, one home purchase, four different jobs, two dogs, several vacations,  two baby girls, lots of arguments, lots of laughs, and a whole lotta love.  Life is good and I’m filled with gratitude.

Now that I have kiddos I thought it would be fun to also decorate for all the little holidays I never really used to decorate for before.  Okay, so they’re both under two…the youngest is 6 months old.  Okay, so maybe I thought it would be fun to decorate for myself as well.

I didn’t go all out or anything.  I didn’t even spend any money, just used what I already had on hand and threw up a couple of paper hearts and pulled some pink and red things together.

Would you also like to know that both my girls’ daycare classes exchanged Valentines.  Their separate classes sent separate notes telling us that the children (hello, babies)  would be exchanging Valentines but feel free to not participate.  Included is a list of all their classmates’ correctly spelled names.  Let me remind you, 6 months old and 21 months old.  I seriously considered not participating but I didn’t want to be THAT mom.  You know.

I bought Valentines day stickers and decorated some chevron notecards I already had on hand.  Then I hand wrote inside each card “Happy Valentines Day!  Your friend, (Alice/Elaine).”  Super simple, super cheap, and actually cute!  I even took pictures.  And here they are:

Oh no.  Here they are not.  I cannot find the pictures I took of these semi-homemade Valentines Day Cards.  Ugh.  Proof of 30 minutes of my life just GONE.

Did you celebrate Valentines?  Parents, did you send your kid with Valentines to share?  Tell me your true feelings on Valentines Day.  Love it, hate it, take it, or leave it?  Answer each one of my questions please.  😉
