Oh Hey

Here are some things I’d like you to know:

+ We are going on another vacation this year. !!!! To Denver to visit the same dear friends we visited last Spring. After feeling like vacations were a distant memory in that phase of we have two babies under two years old, two vacations feels like we won the lottery. We’re bringing the kids and we are so looking forward to a long a weekend away.

+ ALSO I got to have a long girls’ weekend in Austin this year. I know. It’s crazy.  Plus the kids were sick as I was literally driving down the road.  Matt called and said both girls just threw up on themselves in their carseats.  #cringe  Before you think I’m a horrible mom, I offered to turn around three times but my darling husband told me to go on.  Thankful for him and my mother in law who helped out all weekend.

+ Matt and I have taken to having (almost) weekly lunch dates at our favorite authentic Mexican food place. He picks me up from work on my lunch hour and off we go. It’s so nice having that time, just the two of us to chat. Also the Wednesday special: puerco en salsa verde is ahhhhmazing. I get it every single time.

+ I scratched Run a Half Marathon off my bucket list. It truly was an amazing experience. I wish I would’ve written about it much sooner when the memories and endorphins were fresh. I crossed the finish line in just under 2 hours and 10 minutes, and I was pleased as punch with that time. My average pace was about 9:40 and I just cannot say what a great experience the entire thing was – from training, to crossing the finish line, to seeing all the runners and supporters, to my sweet family waiting for me at the end. I’m grateful for it all.

+ In keeping with one little word for 2016 I embarked on a new business adventure with Rodan and Fields. I’ve been intrigued by this company for years and this was the year I took the plunge. First, I love quality of the products, I love how my skin feels, I love helping people feel great about their own skin, and I’m also loving the business side of things. I’m stretching and growing and being challenged in ways that are so new to me.  Of course I’d love to share with you if you are at all interested.

How are you?  It’s been a while.

Denver in May

Last month Matt and I took both our girls to Denver.  It was our first vacation as a family of four.  It was the first time either of the girls had ever been on an airplane.  Which means it was the first time we travelled as parents with two kids on an airplane.

We survived.  Barely.

I’m kidding.  It was fine and worth it! I won’t say it was easy because that would be a blatant lie.  Is anything “easy” when traveling with little people aged 2 years and 9 months?  (Two car seats, luggage, a back pack, a carry on, strollers, one person stays with the kids and luggage while the other parks the car, waiting for the strollers at curbside check for 30 minutes with two tired kids, changing diapers in an airport bathroom, etc, etc…you can imagine).

I will say that this trip was the “easiest” it could have been as far as family vacations go.  We stayed with our close friends at their lovely home in their awesome neighborhood.  (By awesome neighborhood I mean incredible neighborhood with the friendliest neighbors.  We seriously had the itch to go home pack up our house and move in next door.)  We had two bedrooms to ourselves, which is amazing when you have kids in tow.  The direct flight from Oklahoma City to Denver is just a little over an hour, so relatively short.  Our friends have a little boy, Alice’s age, and they played together perfectly.  All those factors made it an ideal first family vacation.

We did a lot of relaxing.  Eating at home, playing basketball, hanging in pj’s, drinking coffee, drinking cold beers outside, riding bikes, going on walks.  We went out to eat, maybe once or twice, and then our friends hosted a cook-out one afternoon.  The entire trip was low key and awesome.

The best part about vacation, besides the location and the break from the daily grind, are the people you’re with.  I’m pretty sure our friends, Adam and Marie,  are our family vacation soul mates.  We always seem to be on the same page and enjoy each other’s company so much.  Before we left we were already making plans for our next family get together.  Can’t wait!

And just like that, our five day trip was up.  One rough late afternoon flight later and we were back in Oklahoma City.  I will forever love vacations but there’s something about returning home after some time away.  It’s literally like slipping into your favorite pj’s and sighing in contentment.

A Wheels on the Bus Birthday Party

Earlier this month we celebrated Alice’s 2nd birthday by throwing her a small Wheels on the Bus themed party.  We kept it small again (see her 1st birthday party here) and just had family in attendance.   To say that Alice loves music would almost be an understatement and the ever popular Wheels on the Bus song has definitely been one of her top favorites.  The idea to throw a Wheels on the Bus themed party for Alice this year, came to me several months ago.  In gathering some ideas, most of the ideas I found on pinterest were either gender neutral or decidedly boy-ish.  Not that it matters too much, but I wanted to add some girly pink to her decor so that’s just what we did.  Overall I think it turned out simple and cute.

Matt’s mom made Alice’s cake again this year and it turned out perfect!  So grateful for my mother in law and all she does for us.

What a difference a year can make!  The best part of the day was seeing Alice take it all in and really enjoy herself.  This time around she took notice of her cake, enjoyed the “happy birthday song,” and tore into her gifts.   She’s certainly well loved by so many people.

p.s. Here’s Alice’s 1st giraffe themed party (please excuse the blurry pictures, apparently all my old posts prior to the WP transition have blurry photos – maybe one day I’ll get around to fixing them…)

Also my Kiddo Birthday Pinterest Board where I file away ideas and inspiration for my girls’ birthday par-tays.

The Weekend Is Almost Upon Us

Hello Friday!!! Whew, let me tell you, it’s been one of those weeks for us. Alice is finally over an ear infection and therefore back to her happy self and Matt is coming out of the woods after having strep throat. So yeah, a sick toddler and a sick husband made for some busy times for this mama. I was pretty exhausted much of this week but since things are turning around for the better, it’s all good.

Good thing, because tomorrow we are having Alice’s SECOND birthday party. (I have an almost two year old!!! What?!) We are celebrating a week early and keeping it low key just as we did for her first birthday. I’ve made the executive decision that birthday parties will be low key and pretty much just family until my kiddos personally ask to invite friends.

So tonight, after both girls go to bed, Matt and I will be on birthday party prep duty. Everyone will be arriving at our house around 11am tomorrow to celebrate our sweet girl. What do you have planned this weekend? Anything good?

Here’s some noteworthy stuff I’ve been enjoying on the internets lately:

inspiration for waking up early

+ which in turn led me to Hello Mornings, a 6 week challenge to maximize your mornings. I started the May 4th session on May 4th, so all the small groups were unfortunately full.  So far, week 1, I’m enjoying the morning Bible Studies and will maybe do the next session starting June 29th and join an accountability group

+ Joy the Baker Podcasts  On a whim, I decided to listen to Joy and Tracy’s recent podcast titled The Captain’s Log and I found myself smiling, laughing, and getting nostalgic for my own best girlfriends that happen to live in my same zip code. I’m hooked and have been since diving into the archives and listening to random episodes here and there.

+ Which in turn led me to Unroll.me How have I never heard of this before?! Like you, maybe, I have(had) waaaayyyy too many mass subscription emails. With unroll.me I was able to unsubscribe from a ton of those unwanted emails all at once. As for the few (okay more than a few) subscribtions, I felt like keeping I was able to “roll them up” into just one email that I receive once a day.  Within that one “roll up” you can skim the entire and delete the entire lot or peruse a can’t resist sale in more detail.  GENIUS. My inbox is so much happier. Check it out you guys. It’s free.

I haven’t been swimsuit shopping in years, but I’m thinking that this summer there will be swimming. This simple yet classy suit really appeals to my postpartum state of mind (and body). It’s a “mom swimsuit” without being too mom-ish.  You know, there’s no attached shorts or anything equally hideous.  Lets label it as a swimsuit for the modern day cool mom.

Wishing you a most excellent weekend you guys!!!

The Weekend Is Almost Upon Us

Hooray for Friday!  This was us last Sunday afternoon: me trying to entertain the girls while Matt was busy whipping up cheese burgers for dinner.  This weekend we loosely plan to have our April Date (It’s Matt’s turn to plan) which will most likely occur at home since we have no babysitting lined up.  We are also planning on taking the girls to the zoo for the first time.   I’ve never been to the Oklahoma City Zoo, but I hear it’s not bad.  I have been to the San Diego Zoo dozens of times and it’s definitely great.  Matt and I are pretty excited to have a legitimate reason to go to the zoo.  🙂

What do you have planned for the weekend?

>>>>>

To get you to 5 o’clock, here are a couple things I so enjoyed on the internet this week:

100 different mascaras tested on one eye – I was happy to see that I liked many of the inexpensive brands best!

A spectacular and reflective wedding anniversary post

5 Ingredient Easy White Chicken Chili – I made this for my family for the 2nd time and it’s just so easy and so good.  We love it topped with crumbled tortilla chips, diced avocado, shredded cheddar, and a dollop of sour cream.

2nd Birthday Party Planning

Alice is going to be TWO next month.  Two!  Seems like we just celebrated her 1st birthday last month, while simultaneously feeling like that party occurred eons ago.  After all, a lot has happened in the past year.  Alice now has an 8+ month old baby sister!

In honor of the birthday girl’s favorite song these days, we are having a Wheels on the Bus themed soiree.  I ordered the above invitation through  Etsy and just erased all our personal details (address, phone number, last name) before sharing it here for privacy reasons.  In real life it’s not blurry at all.

I had the invites printed at Office Depot and they’re…fine.  The price cannot be beat, super cheap.  You do get what you pay for and I’m always disappointed with their card stock selection – thin and flimsy.  I’m thinking about beefing them up with some craft paper card stock I have on hand or I may just mail them off as is.  I go back and forth on ordering really nice invitations, but cannot justify spending $50+++ on something most people are going to throw away.  As for a keepsake for ourselves, yes it would be nice to have a sturdier copy.  However, I just used the digital file of her first birthday party invitation and had it printed right onto one of the pages of her One Year Old Baby Book that I made on Shutterfly.  So there’s that.

We are keeping the party small again this year.  Just inviting grandparents, aunts, uncles, and her two cousins.  I’ve decided that we’ll start inviting outside friends to birthday parties when it becomes a personal request from the birthday girl.
